Health & Physical Education Courses

Physical Education courses, with the exception of Health & Wellness, are excluded from the cumulative grade percent. Students may earn credit for participating in an STA-sponsored sport or by applying for an independent study.

The Health and Wellness course focuses on the latest trends in health, nutrition and wellness. From stress management to what makes up the things we eat, we will explore a variety of health topics and create simple steps for a healthier lifestyle. Areas of study include: mindfulness techniques, stress management, depression and depressive disorders, developing healthy relationships, human reproduction, sexually transmitted infections, substance use and abuse, nutrition.

* Health & Wellness is included in the cumulative GPA. All other PE courses are excluded from the cumulative GPA.

This traditional PE semester course will include sections on eclipse ball, volleyball, pickleball, flag football and Ultimate Frisbee.

Credit: One-half credit

This course builds core strength with Pilates mat exercises and flexibility with classic Hatha yoga postures. Attention is paid to proper alignment and breathing.

This semester course will include student research into workout offerings available via the internet and DVD’s (variety of  types: step, zumba, bands etc. of workouts are available without spending money on fitness clubs) , Badminton and Pickle Ball.

This course introduces students to the skills and knowledge necessary to begin weight training. In addition to studying the basic techniques associated with weight training, students learn the benefits and risks involved in weight training as well as the basic principles of creating a fitness goal and a plan towards that goal. With hands-on, practical activities and projects, this course provides necessary knowledge for Sports Performance as well as teaching tools to maintain a healthy body for life.

This course combines classic Hatha yoga postures and vinyasa flow patterns with meditation and breathing techniques for stress reduction.

Students may apply for this independent study course to earn .50 credits towards the physical education graduation requirement. It does not replace the required Health & Wellness course. The independent study must be a sport not offered through the Academy’s athletics program. It will require a minimum of 60 hours of physical activity for the current semester in which the student is applying for credit. All applications must be submitted by May 1, for the Fall Semester and by December 1, for the Spring Semester. Print and submit the application to the Academic Principal.
